Assignment Eligibility and Availability Codes, AEA Codes for short, are codes assigned by a military branch to indicate a Soldier’s status with the Army. They are used to identify the eligibility and availability of soldiers for assignments, promotions, awards, and military schooling. The codes are based on a variety of factors, including current rank, MOS/AOC, SQI, and language. They also include a number indicating the date the code is valid for. Soldiers can check their AEA codes at any time in eMILPO. This easy-to-use tool lets them see what they have available to them in terms of reassignments and other opportunities. Using this tool can help Soldiers make the best decisions about their careers.
The Army Human Resources Command (HRC) assigns the AEA codes army to soldiers. These codes are used to determine eligibility for special programs and assignments. They are also important for determining when Soldiers can be unslotted. The AEA codes are updated regularly and are displayed in the eMILPO drop down menu. For enlisted soldiers, the AEA code represents the availability of a specific position. Commissioned officers are classified by their areas of concentration, or AOCs. These are two digits plus a letter and are grouped together by branch of service. Warrant officers are classified by their warrant officer military occupational specialty, or WOMOS. These are three digits and may be alphanumeric (specifications can be found in DA PAM, Chapter 12, table 12-1).

Army personnel use the AEA CODES list to track their assignment eligibility and availability. The list includes 35 codes that identify various assignments. These include priority national and Army missions, institutional Army goals, Soldiers’ personal desires, and career advancement opportunities. The AEA CODES list is regularly updated by the AEA and is available online to all personnel.
